What did you do in the last six months?
We didn’t stop actually, very busy time. After recording the EP album, we were preparing the worldwide release, promotion, and we were also touring thought all Spain territory, from small clubs to important festivals like Martohell in Barcelona, important final contests like Wacken Metal Battle, Villa de Bilbao, recording a video for the release… pretty intense!!!
What do you’ve in your wallet now?
Why do you want to know that? Are you planning to mug me in a corner? Hehehe… Nothing really especial I must admit, some money for everyday expenses, credit cards, stuff like that…
Why this name for your band?!
It comes from the old Scandinavian Norse mythology. JOTNAR is a mythological race of Giants with superhuman size and strength… somewhere between men and gods. I’ve always been a huge lover of Norse Mythology and we thought this name would fit perfectly our music.
How much important is the image (look) for your band? Why?
I think it’s always important, even more in this society we live. It’s something we use to care about but not forgetting the most important for us, which is the music and the live performance.
Talk to me about the new EP “Giant”. Are you fully satisfied?
It was a pretty good experience for us. We recorded completely in our own studios in Canary Islands, the “Jotunheim Studios” and produced by ourselves, which allowed working with calm and doing like we wanted. We are really satisfied with the final result. We got it mixed and mastered out in Canada, and the result was really great. There is always room for improvements, that is why there will be a next full album soon…
Which is the highpoint of this album?
I would say the variety of the songs. Even when it’s a short album, we tried to select a little bit of all we do, from very direct and aggressive songs to more melodic and catchy melodies, vocals, etc. It’s an album that doesn’t bore at all.
… And the lowpoint?
It gets short, hehehe. But that will be compensated in next full album.
Talk to me about your collaboration with Murdered Music!
It’s really great to be able to deal with a musician and producer like Ettore Rigotti in front of a record label. Everything would have been different if we’d just talk about numbers, money and things like that, but talking and dealing with a musician and producer is something completely different, he knows the music and the business from inside, so we got something from both worlds.
What’s your idea of perfect happiness?
Be able to do what you love more in this life, in our case, living as a musician, write music, play live all around the world and meet a lot of people, fans, bands, etc… That would be the perfect happiness.
Who are some of the bands you admire?
There are too many awesome bands we like to just name a few. Something which is very enriching for our music, for instance, is that every one of us has some kind of different musical taste, some prefer classic melodic death metal, others a little more modern or hardcore and metalcore, etc… that is always good and inspiring when writing new material. Although our music has references from the Scandinavian metal.
What song is in your head right now?
“The chosen pessimist” by In Flames. Really cool and almost atmospheric song. It’s like a soundtrack.
Name 3 words that describe your band.
Aggressive, melodic… and “Giant”!
The best and worst quality of your band?
I think our best quality is the live performance. We really love playing live, no matter if is a small venue for 100 people or a big festival for 20.000, we are always going to “break” the stage and do our best. And the worst… maybe that we live in an island and we are a little isolated from the main metal scene (but this can change soon!).
What’s the most embarrassing situation you’ve ever been with Jotnar?
Playing in a fest in front of 2 or 3 thousand people and that, in the middle of a song, the electrical generator of the fest stopped and all music and lights went down.
What’s the most ridiculous rumour you’ve read about the band?
That Derrick Green (Sepultura’s singer) plays guitar in Jotnar.
Do you’ve a good reason to be in Behind Magazine?
It’s always really cool to appear in different magazines, not always metal. We also love to practice extreme sports, from snowboarding, surf, bmx, enduro, quad, free climbing and a long etc… and it’s an honour to be in a magazine like this.
Since I was a kid, I grew up seen skateboarding and surf videos with punk music… I think it’s time to change that and start using more metal music like Jotnar in these kinds of videos. It would be awesome to see YouTube full of extreme videos with our music…
